If you suffer from heavy menstrual periods, you are not alone. Approximately one in five women experience a heavy flow during their menstrual cycle to the point it is disruptive to everyday life.
NovaSure endometrial ablation is a safe in-office procedure that can reduce or eliminate heavy menstrual bleeding. It works by removing the uterine lining (endometrium) which can cause the heavy bleeding. Read our previous post to learn how the procedure works.
How do you know if you’re a candidate for NovaSure? Talk to one of our physicians about your menstrual cycle. Before your visit, it can be helpful to track a few menstrual cycles or recall notes from memory that can reference the following:
- Number of days bleeding
- Type of protection you need each day (light panty liner, heavy pad, light or more absorbent tampon or double protection)
- Frequency you need to change protection each day
- Any clots in your flow
- Other symptoms (cramping, fatigue, irritability, headaches)
- Effect on your lifestyle (missing work, social events, etc.)
Your menstrual cycle patterns can help your physician determine if NovSure may be a solution. Tests may likely be ordered to rule out other reasons for your heavy menstrual flow such as a pelvic infection, result of wearing an IUD, fibroid cysts or polyps.
It is not uncommon for women approaching menopause to develop heavy bleeding during their menstrual cycle. If you are no longer planning to have children and are experiencing a heavy period, a conversation with one of our physicians can help you learn about causes and treatment options.
